Ultrasound guidance is the gold standard for vascular access device insertion. Research has demonstrated improved success and reduced complications when ultrasound is used in place of blind landmark techniques. Ultrasound training is now recommended as part of training central venous access device placement. In addition to simulation training a good knowledge of the physics of ultrasound and how this relates to image production and interpretation is deemed necessary. This module encompasses the key elements of best practice to maintain and improve clinical outcomes and integrates Vessel Health & Vein Preservation. The module is designed to facilitate continuous professional development and learning, along with supporting reflective and evidence-based practice.
